Kevin Youkilis Not Among Six Red Sox Selected For All-Star Game

After the unveiling of the MLB All-Star Game rosters, six members of the Boston Red Sox found out that they are headed to Anaheim. However, Kevin Youkilis, perhaps their best player, did not. Adrian Beltre, David Ortiz, Victor Martinez, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, and Clay Buchholz (headed for the DL) will all participate in the Midsummer Classic.

But Youkilis, the team leader in home runs, RBI, and OBP, will have to wait for the results of the final at-large roster positions if he is to make the team. Over the Monster, the official Red Sox SBN blog, had this to say about it:

Adrian Beltre, David Ortiz, Victor Martinez, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester, and Clay Buchholz.

That’s a pretty good collection of players. But someone is missing…

Oh, right, Kevin Youkilis. One of the most productive batters in the league, an early MVP candidate, and in any reasonable world, an All-Star. He still has a chance to get in, but Youk should be in from the get go.

None of the Red Sox made it in as starters via the fan vote (much in contrast to previous years), but given some of the results it’s clear that’s hardly an indication of worthiness. And when the pitchers and reserves had been announced, the Red Sox had a very healthy group of representatives.

Every All-Star Game has its snubs, but this one seems particularly odd for the resurgent Red Sox.
