Geoff Blum Reminds Us That His Shirt-Related Injury Is More Reasonable Than it Sounds

On Sunday, Astros infielder Geoff Blum was placed on the 15-day disabled list after he felt a pop in his elbow late last week. With the soreness continuing to bother him as the weekend commenced, Blum got evaluated at a local hospital, where he was told that he had “loose bodies” - small loose fragments of cartilage or bone - floating around in the elbow.↵↵That this pop happened while Blum was changing clothes following last Thursday’s game against the Padres will doubtlessly elicit peals of laughter from some laypeople, who will instantly place the injury among the most bizarre or trivial off-field incidents in the sport’s history. ↵

↵↵Aware of the tittering that greeted the news, Blum cautioned outsiders from thinking it was a freak incident, noting that it’s something that could happen to just about any player in the league. The elbow seized up when he was getting dressed. An unfortunate coincidence is all it is.↵

↵↵⇥“There are probably 90 percent of us in the big leagues that have loose bodies floating around,” Blum said. “It just so happens that after the game, it tightened up on me. The shirt had nothing to do with the [darn] injury.”↵↵↵Looks like the reporter had to clean up that quote a little bit. Be advised: if you happen to run across Geoff Blum in your travels, make sure not to ask him about the elbow injury he got from a shirt. He seems a little torqued up about it.↵
