Yovani Gallardo’s Oblique Strain Lands Him On DL

Yovani Gallardo is about the only reliable pitcher the Brewers have had all year long. And now they'll have to do without him for a little while, as an injury suffered last Sunday has put him on the disabled list:

Gallardo to DL after all (left oblique). Officially rules him out for All-Star Game. D Davis activated from DL. Story coming to Brewers.com

Through 18 starts, Gallardo owns a 2.58 ERA, with 122 strikeouts in 111.2 innings. He’s blossomed into an ace at 24 years old, fulfilling the promise he’s always had, which makes it bothersome that he’s suffered an injury of the sort that tends to linger. In a disappointing season for the Brewers, Gallardo has been a bright spot, so even with nothing on the line, everyone would like to have him back. He’ll be eligibile to return from the DL on July 20th, but may take a little while longer than that, depending on the severity of the strain and the recovery process.

As noted, the injury will keep Gallardo from participating in next week’s All Star Game. He will, however, still be present for the festivities.
