Johnny Cueto Suspended Seven Games, Managers Baker And La Russa Get Two Games Each

Suspensions from Tuesday’s brawl between the Cardinals and Reds were handed out on Thursday, which means we finally know the punishment for kicking opponents in the face.

Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto, who was seen pinned against the backstop, kicking his way out, received the harshest penalty, earning a seven-game suspension for what baseball called “violent and aggressive actions.” According to the Cardinals, Cueto’s metal spikes left cuts on both Chris Carpenter and Jason LaRue.

St. Louis manager Tony La Russa and Reds manager Dusty Baker were each suspended two games as well. The punishment takes effect Friday, though Cueto can appeal if he chooses.

Cueto, La Russa and Baker were also fined an undisclosed amount, as was the Reds’ Brandon Phillips (the fight’s instigator) and pitcher Russ Springer, along with the Cardinals’ Yadier Molina and Carpenter.
