BJ Penn: “His corner, they don’t have much to work with. They’ve just got little Frankie Edgar.”

BJ Penn hasn’t done an awful lot of talking leading up to rematch with the newly crowned Frankie Edgar, but just a few short weeks out from UFC 118, BJ is starting to pick up some steam. In a recent promo for UFC 118, Penn questions the legitimacy of Edgar being the UFC’s lightweight champion.

↵↵“He’s running around,” said Penn. “Just step up and fight. And then I see his whole team run and pick him up. All your boys put you on their shoulders and dance you around in front of the judges and try to steal the victory. I’m not gonna be a part of that. Whatever, man. That’s the man you are. You’re the Ultimate Fighting Champion? Okay. I got you. It’s a joke.”

↵“I’m not afraid to exchange with him in any way,” said Penn. “I don’t think he wants to exchange with me. He’s going to be running around. He’s just going to try to jazz up what he did last time. A little quicker, a little better, maybe throw in a little kick. His corner, they don’t have much to work with. They’ve just got little Frankie Edgar. They don’t have the knockout king or the submission king. They’ve just got Frankie Edgar.”

↵↵This seems to be a recurring act with BJ, and belittling an opponents win isn’t anything new. I’m sure most of us remember the onslaught of comments coming out of the UFC Prime Time leading up to his rematch with Georges St- Pierre, but I don’t really understand it. While most fighters internalize their losses as a failure on their part, BJ continues to go after guys after they’ve already beat him.

↵If Penn puts everything into this fight, which was pretty suspect the first go around, I don’t see how he loses this fight. There were rumors BJ was battling a pretty bad sinus infection back at UFC 112, but all excuses aside, the fight was close enough that it could have gone either way. This is exactly the wake up call that Penn needed. He was outright embarrassed with his last performance, so I think it’s safe to assume we see the BJ who showed up to fight Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. Edgar will have his work cut out for him on August 28th.
