Fun-Loving Scott Speed Turns Serious On Golf Course

Most NASCAR fans think of Scott Speed as an out-there, fun-loving guy with a vibrant personality.

But when he gets on the golf course, Speed turns oh-so-serious.

Speed brought out his ultra-competitive side on Monday at the Kevin Harvick Foundation Pro-Am, showing some solid skills on the course.

Though he played with pro Chris Wilson, Speed’s team used several of the driver’s shots and Speed was even closest to the hole a few times.

"I'm a competitive guy," he said. "I'm real serious about the game, for sure. It's good training for me to be patient. You know, I'm not a patient person. And when I get frustrated on the golf course, it's so easy to see for myself. It just makes me a better athlete for everything."

Speed used to be an average golfer until he broke down last year and decided to start taking lessons.

“I finally wasn’t stubborn enough to say, ‘OK, let’s try a lesson and see what that does,’” he said. “And that opened up such a huge amount of information.

“I started learning the fundamentals of affecting what happens to the golf ball and what you can do to the swing to make that happen. That’s made the biggest difference.”
