Tigers Top Yankees 3-1, A-Rod Leaves Game With Tight Calf Muscle

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Ryan Raburn continued his recent home run barrage by drilling a two-run shot off Javier Vazquez in the second inning, as the Tigers held off New York, 3-1, dropping the Yankees into a first-place tie in the AL East.

Max Scherzer (8-9) allowed two hits, walked two and struck out six batters over the first six innings to snap a four-start winless streak. It was just the second win (2-6) for the right-hander on the road this season.

Jose Valverde walked Brett Gardner with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but then got Derek Jeter to ground into a game-ending double play and recorded his 23rd save of the year.

The Yankees, who lost their second in a row to start this four-game set, are even with Tampa Bay atop the division. The Rays rallied with four runs in the eighth inning in a 6-4 win over Texas Monday night.

Miguel Cabrera homered off Joba Chamberlain in the ninth inning for the Tigers, who won for the third straight time.

The game also marked Johnny Damon's return to the Bronx. Detroit's starting designated hitter received a standing ovation and then tipped his batting helmet in the first inning to reveal his Mohawk. Damon, who was a big part of last year's World Series championship and spent four years with the Yankees, went 0-for-3 with a pair of walks.

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez left Monday's game after four innings with a tight left calf muscle. Nick Swisher departed with tightness in his right forearm while trying to make a sliding catch on Austin Jackson's single to right field in the sixth inning.

Vazquez (9-9) had six strikeouts, but was charged with the loss after allowing five hits and four walks over four innings.
