Following a terrific first half of the year, Josh Willingham’s knee started barking, and the outfield has had to undergo season-ending surgery. He will rest and rehab in an effort to be ready in time for 2011 spring training.

    Just to provide some closure on the matter, we go to William Ladson:

    There was no point in Willingham trying to play through pain the rest of the way, given the irrelevance of the Nationals’ schedule and the difficulty he was having at the plate. It’s a matter of being healthy in time for 2011, which shouldn’t be a problem.

    Courtesy of William Ladson, we now have confirmation of what has been suspected for a number of days: Josh Willingham’s 2010 season is finished.

    Willingham’s injury has already opened up a lot more playing time for Mike Morse, and should give Nyjer Morgan an opportunity to find his way back into the lineup as well.

    Nationals Prepare To Place Josh Willingham On DL

    Rumor has it that Nationals outfield Josh Willingham is facing season-ending knee surgery, and while it hasn’t been confirmed that the rest of his 2010 is shot, the team is preparing to take the first step:

    The only question now is whether Willingham has surgery before the end of the year, or after it. It is possible to play through his current injury, but it is by no means pleasant.
