CONCACAF Champions League: Addlery, Copete Goals Leave Puerto Rico, Olimpia Drawn 1-1
An evenly played match brought the fair result when Mauricio Copete barged through the Islander defense for a 68th minute equalizer, giving Olimpia a 1-1 draw in Bayamon. Though only the first match of Group D play, failure to get three points could prove a major setback for Puerto Rico, who are likely competing with Olimpia for second place in a group which also contains Mexico’s Toluca.
Things looked more promising for Puerto Rico in the 40th minute, when Nicholas Addlery’s back-heeled shot beat Noel Valladares for the match’s first goal. A hard cross from Nick Foley on the right flank found the big Jamaican forward seven yards out. Addlery let the ball run to his right foot before beating Valladares to the `keeper’s left post, the Islander’s competition-leading third goal.
The draw temporarily puts both teams at the top of Group D pending Toluca’s match with El Salvador’s FAS, but the result also means the Islanders must look to make-up the points against Toluca or at Olimpia in October.
