A group led by an English businessman has a bold idea to help soccer catch on in the United States: Bring back Pele and restart the old New York Cosmos.
New York Group And Pele Try To Bring Back The Cosmos
Of course, Pele wouldn’t actually be playing in this scenario. But he’s serving as honorary president of the new/old club, which is setting its sights on joining Major League Soccer at some point.
The revival of the Cosmos -- who won five championships in the defunct North American Soccer League -- dovetails nicely with league hopes to locate its 20th team in New York City.
Pele is already envisioning the boundless joy that sports fans will feel about another possible intra-New York area championship.
"One day, I hope to be happy to see the New York Cosmos playing the Red Bulls in the championship game."
But don’t worry, sportscasters -- joining MLS is still a few years away. You have plenty of time to figure out how to fit subways and the inevitable “Battle of the Beverages” puns into your copy.
