Alex Rodriguez Headed To Disabled List With Calf Strain

After aggravating a calf injury that has hampered him throughout the past week, Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be placed on the disabled list.

“We’re going to play it safe,” [Yankees manager Joe] Girardi said. “We don’t feel that he’s any worse than he was before, but we’re just going to play it extremely safe and know that we’ll have a player in 15 days.”

This is A-Rod’s second injury this month, as he missed a small amount of time to a leg contusion earlier in August. Through 112 games this season, Rodriguez has hit 21 home runs and maintained an .818 OPS.

The Yankees’ injury woes continue, as they lost slugger Lance Berkman to the disabled list just two days ago. The Yanks. After Saturday afternoon’s win, they stand 1.5 games ahead of the Rays in the A.L. East.
