For several days, it’s been assumed that the White Sox would claim Manny Ramirez off waivers and work out a way to get him from the Dodgers for the stretch run. Ken Rosenthal tells us that it may not be that simple:
White Sox Aren’t Only Team Interested In Manny Ramirez
The Chicago White Sox have talked to the Los Angeles Dodgers about a trade for Manny Ramirez even though he has yet to clear waivers, according to major-league sources.
The Dodgers, however, have spoken with at least one other team about Ramirez, and might not trade him at all if they continue to gain in the wild-card standings, sources say.
The fact that the Dodgers are kinda sorta on the fringes of the race isn’t very meaningful. At 5.5 back of the Wild Card, they’re also trailing Philadelphia, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Colorado, and the odds that they’ll be able to leap past all four are highly unlikely.
What’s interesting, though, is this other team that has talked to the Dodgers. It’s impossible to judge the team’s motives or claiming potential from where we sit, given we don’t know who the team is or how good of a fit it could be, but it is possible that, on waivers, Manny may not last all the way until the White Sox. All teams in the NL will get a shot at him first, as will teams in the AL with a worse record than Chicago.
Rosenthal also mentions the possibility of Manny clearing waivers, but the White Sox probably wouldn’t let that happen, as it would open the door to other suitors like Tampa Bay and Texas to stand as competition.
