Cubs Interview Eric Wedge As Team Begins Search For Managerial Replacement

Lou Piniella may have just retired a few days ago, but it's never too early to start looking for a replacement. The Chicago Cubs haven't wasted any time, and according to Bruce Levine, have already conducted their first interview:

The Chicago Cubs have begun their formal process of finding their next manager, according to a major league source.

Former Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge had a face-to-face interview with Cubs general manager Jim Hendry on Thursday in Cleveland, as Hendry searches for a replacement for retired manager Lou Piniella.

Wedge is part of a group of managerial candidates that includes favorite Ryne Sandberg, Fredi Gonzalez, Pat Listach, and interim Mike Quade. Joe Girardi's contract with the Yankees also expires this year, and he could become a strong possibility should he leave New York.

Wedge is the former manager of the Indians, with whom he went 561-573 with one trip to the playoffs. He and Cubs GM Jim Hendry have known each other since 1989, when both were involved in college baseball.

The Cubs are looking to have their managerial vacancy filled by November. For more on the story as it develops, stay tuned to this StoryStream, and follow along at Bleed Cubbie Blue and SB Nation Chicago.
