Most Popular Driver Award Votes Top One Million

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has won the last seven NMPA Hamburger Helper Most Popular Driver awards.

Is there any reason to think he won’t win a record eighth straight, breaking a tie with Bill Elliott?

Maybe.

There have now been more than a million votes now cast for the Most Popular Driver award, and though our best guess is that Earnhardt Jr. has his usual lead, the award process could shake things up this year.

At the start of the Chase, the top 10 vote-getters will have their totals reset to zero. That’s right – zero. Then it’s a 10-week competition to see which driver gets the most votes out of those 10.

The current top 10 features a couple surprising names.

Earnhardt Jr. is obviously among them, along with regulars Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Kevin Harvick, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart (in no particular order).

But the top 10 currently includes Kyle Busch, who would replace Michael Waltrip in last year’s top 10 if the voting holds. Also, the list continues to include Bobby Labonte despite his lack of a high-profile ride this season.

Could a surge from a fan base other than Earnhardt Jr.‘s topple the seven-time Most Popular Driver?

It seems doubtful, but we’ll see if the format makes a difference.
