Before we talk about the latest arrest of a Georgia football player, one thing should be clear: This is a new arrest that you have not heard about before. Though you can be forgiven for thinking the opposite.
Does No Georgia Football Player Hold A Valid Driver’s License?
Washaun Ealey has been suspended from the team for at least the Sept. 4 opener against Louisiana-Lafayette after an early-Friday arrest for hit-and-run of a parked vehicle and driving with a suspended license.
While there is something unusual about the sheer volume of Georgia arrests -- 23 of current or former players over the last three years, and eight this year -- SEC players will be SEC players.
On the other hand, four of the arrests in the last calendar year and six of them over the three-year time frame have involved license violations of some kind. And a seventh was possession of a fake ID, but this is college football we’re talking about.
Which raises many questions, not least among them: Why is Georgia recruiting so many players who end up driving without licenses or with suspended licenses? Is it simply bad luck? Do the police in Athens have nothing better to do? Can Georgia players not car pool?
Oh, yeah -- that doesn’t turn out well either.
But Dawg Sports, our Georgia blog, has an idea.
When Greg McGarity begins his new job next Wednesday, his first act needs to be to appoint Suzanne Yoculan the license and registration czar of University of Georgia athletics.
Hey, it can’t hurt.
