After over a month of discussion, Mike Modano finally has a new home. The 40-year-old veteran center will sign with the Detroit Red Wings this week, according to a report by Helene St. James at the Detroit Free Press.
Mike Modano Reportedly Set To Join Detroit Red Wings
Mike Modano will join the Red Wings, the Free Press has learned.
The Wings have been in hot pursuit of Modano, flying him in from Dallas a month ago and wooing him over lunch and a Tigers game. He also has suitors in San Jose and Minnesota, but has made up his mind.
"Big announcement Thursday," Modano sent in a text Monday.
The Freep reports that Modano’s contract will be worth $1.25 million, and that it’s a one-year deal. Obviously, that’s much lower than the $2.25 million he made with Dallas last season. A few other teams were reported to be interested in Modano’s services, but in the end, Modano has decided to go back to Michigan, where he grew up.
In Detroit, they’ll herald the signing as a homecoming for the native of nearby Westland, but in Dallas, where Modano played his entire career save a few seasons in Minnesota before the team moved south, they don’t see it that way.
Mike Modano has been a part of the Stars organization for twenty years, and yet people insist on calling Detroit his "home." He's going to live here after he's done in Detroit. He's a Dallas guy through and through. Being from some place doesn't make it your home. But I digress...
The official announcement, as alluded to above, is expected on Thursday. For more between now and then, head to Winging It In Motown and SB Nation Detroit.
