Welcome Aboard: Lilly Pitches A Gem In Debut As Dodgers Edge Padres, 2-1

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Ted Lilly was impressive in his Dodgers debut, giving up just one run on two hits over seven innings, as Los Angeles edged the San Diego Padres, 2-1, in the second test of a four-game series.

Lilly (4-8), who struck out five and did not issue a walk, was acquired by the Dodgers from the Cubs prior to the non-waiver trade deadline. The 34- year-old improved to 6-2 lifetime against San Diego.

Russell Martin hit a two-run double for the Dodgers, who snapped a six-game skid.

Mat Latos (11-5) went six innings in the start, allowing two runs on four hits to suffer his first loss since June 4.

Miguel Tejada homered for the Padres, who won 10-5 in the series opener on Monday.

San Diego scored its lone run of the game in the first on Tejada’s one-out, solo homer to left. It was his first homer as a member of the Padres.

Los Angeles plated two runs in the second to go in front for good. Matt Kemp and Casey Blake walked to put men on first and second with one out. Martin made it a 2-1 game with a double to right-center field.

Lilly retired the final 20 batters he faced before handing the ball over to Hong-Chih Kuo in the eighth. Kuo worked around a two-out walk to keep the Dodgers in front.

The Padres put men on first and second with one out in the ninth. Jonathan Broxton, though, got Ryan Ludwick to ground into a double play to pick up his 21st save of the year.

The Dodgers lead the season series with the Padres, 6-4...Los Angeles was without shortstop Rafael Furcal (back)...The Dodgers placed pitcher Jeff Weaver on the 15-day disabled list and recalled pitcher Ramon Troncoso from Triple-A Albuquerque...Latos fanned six batters and walked two. He has yielded two runs or fewer in each of his last nine starts.
