The new Madden video game hits stores on Tuesday, thus giving ESPN cause to publish a lengthy feature on how the franchise, now in its 22nd year, came into existence and has generally dominated the console football marketplace ever since (quick hint: exclusive NFL and NFLPA licenses!)
Kellen Winslow, II: A Doting Husband To His Madden Game
↵To illustrate what a cultural force the Madden games are, the piece must show not only how we, the insignificant unwashed masses, enjoy the game, but also how the very important pro athletes do as well. This, of course, is not very revelatory. Many people are aware that athletes spend an inordinate amount of time playing video games.
↵But leave it to Josh Cribbs to show just how inordinate inordinate can get.
↵↵“I used to play ‘Madden’ all the time with [former teammate] Kellen Winslow [Jr.],” he said. “When Kellen got married, he did it at his house. After the ceremony, he went to play ‘Madden’! He just got married. His wife is sitting there. And he’s playing. We all made fun of him.”
↵↵“First dance? Sure, fine. I guess the menu music works as good as any. Oop, nevermind. It’s done loading.”
↵Then again, unlike Seahawks defensive lineman Quinn Pitcock, Winslow can at least claim he didn’t lose a year of his career because of a video game addiction. Foolish motorcycle antics, however...
