Once again, Keith Olbermann has left the world of sports broadcasting to focus exclusively on political punditry, according to a report that NBC has removed him from its Sunday Football Night In America pregame show.
NBC Slices One Talking Head Off Its ‘Football Night In America’ Hydra
↵SportsByBrooks has the report, citing sources at NBC who said that cast and crew of the show were informed of the move during a preseason production meeting on Tuesday.
↵↵I’m told that NBC News officials requested the move, citing Olbermann’s weekday commitment to MSNBC’s Countdown with Keith Olbermann. During the 2009 NFL season, Olbermann periodically did not appear on Friday editions of Countdown.
Network television sources confirmed to me that Olbermann’s departure from FNIA was not due to any conflict with cast or production crew members. I was also given no indication that Olbermann’s politics had anything to do with the move.
↵↵It’s not the worst move for the network to trim the glut of commentators from the show, even if that’s not a unique problem among NFL pregame shows. Of course, it didn’t help that Olbermann very often gave off the impression that he’d rather be doing just about anything else besides talking over highlights of that day’s slate of NFL games.
