With the Tampa Bay Rays scrapping for the A.L. East lead with the New York Yankees, it appears as though they'll have to manage without slugger Carlos Pena. The first baseman's sprained foot is sending him to the disabled list.
Carlos Pena Headed To Disabled List With Sprained Foot
#Rays are playing 1B Carlos Pena on the DL, retro to Aug. 1, and recalling relief p Dale Thayer.. Pena's injury: plantar facia sprain.
The 32-year-old Pena is experiencing a bit of an off-year; while he has slugged 21 home runs, his woeful .212 batting average is reflected in his .772 OPS. Since Pena's replacement on the roster is a pitcher, it seems likely that Ben Zobrist, who has played a few games at first this season, could fill in for him.
Entering Friday night’s games, the Rays are 0.5 games behind the Yankees in the East, but hold a steady 5.5-game lead in the wild card race.
