In the opening bout of the UFC 117 pay-per-view Junior dos Santos earned a heavyweight title shot against the winner of Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez. It was a very impressive performance by the Brazilian as he was able to keep the fight on the feet and land hard uppercuts, straight right hands and big body shots to dominate all three rounds.

The first round was the most lopsided of the fight as Junior rocked Nelson badly at several points but Nelson was able to keep his hands up and protect his face to prevent a stoppage. In the second and third the pace slowed as both men began to tire but continued to come forward and throw. At no point did Nelson back down as he continued to try to get takedowns and land big overhand rights but he was never able to get his game going with Junior maintaining good distance and throwing disciplined punches.
After the fight ended the scores read 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27 all for Junior dos Santos.
