First baseman Carlos Delgado, who has not appeared in the major leagues in over a year, has been signed by the Boston Red Sox, reports Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal:
Carlos Delgado Reportedly Signs Minor-League Deal With Red Sox
The 38-year-old Delgado has suffered from hip ailments in recent years. Given the team's loss of Kevin Youkilis to injury, they're likely to let Delgado play a few minor-league games at first base to see whether he can field effectively.
The Red Sox currently stand in third place, five games behind the A.L. East-leading Yankees, but they've won eight of their last eleven games. If they can keep themselves within striking distance, and Delgado can prove that his hip isn't a major issue, the future Hall of Fame candidate has the potential to make a major impact down the stretch.
