The ACC Becomes The All-Collapse Conference Earlier Than Usual

One of the ACC’s virtues as a collection of football teams is the consistency with which it is populated by middling teams. Usually, it takes a month or two before the “Every team will finish 6-6” ennui sets in. This year, it might never even get that good.

↵Five ACC teams were ranked in the preseason AP Poll; those five teams (Virginia Tech, Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina) are now a combined 3-7, with none of those wins coming against FBS competition. Today, the four ACC teams that were ranked in this week’s AP Poll all lost: Miami to Ohio State by 12, Florida State to Oklahoma by 31, Virginia Tech to FCS team James Madison by five, and Georgia Tech to “We Just Lost To North Dakota State” Kansas by 3.

↵This is partly a product of aggressive scheduling—Miami, FSU, and Georgia Tech all went on the road—and mostly evidence of conference-wide incompetence. Collectively, the ACC has just four wins over FBS teams through two weeks (North Carolina State could add another by beating Central Florida tonight), and just one win over a BCS conference team. Wake Forest earned that win today—by beating Duke by just six, 54-48.
