Week 1 NFL Scores And Results: Bears Beat Lions As Jay Cutler Goes Off And Calvin Johnson’s TD Catch Overruled

The Bears beat the Lions 19-14 in what many expected to be one of the least exciting games of the week. As it turns out there was plenty of drama in this one.

Here are the highlights:

  • Jay Cutler went off completing 23-of-35 passes for 372 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.
  • Matthew Stafford was knocked out of the game after being sacked by Julius Peppers.
  • Rookie Jahvid Best ran for just 20 yards on 14 carries in his NFL debut.
  • Shaun Hill, replacing Stafford, drove the Lions to within scoring range in the final minutes.

It was at the end of the game where things got interesting. Calvin Johnson caught a Hill touchdown pass late in the game and came down, with both knees hitting the ground, and let the ball go as he started to stand up. Referees ruled that he didn’t complete the entire process of making the catch and ruled it no catch. Replays showed that the Lions may have gotten a bad call.

Check out Pride of Detroit and Windy City Gridiron for more on the game.
