Report: Matt Stafford Won’t Need Surgery, But QB Seeing Specialist

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Lions starting quarterback Matt Stafford will not need surgery on the arm he injured during Sunday’s Bears-Lions game. So that’s the good news.

On the flip side, Schefter reports that Stafford will meet with Dr. James Andrews. That’s never good news. He’ll likely miss this weekend’s matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles, and even though he’s avoided surgery, the timetable for his return remains in doubt. The Detroit Free-Press reports:

“Matt’s very sore today,” Schwartz said. “We’ve had some good returns from his test that it doesn’t look like surgery is going to be needed, but how much time he misses is still going to be up in the air and we’ll probably know a little bit more on Wednesday.”

According to a report on NFL.com, Stafford may miss 4-6 weeks with the injury.

“I can’t really speak” on that report, Stafford said. “I don’t really know what I’m going to miss. I don’t know if any.”

So for now, it appears the injury's not season-threatening. But beyond that, the prognosis is unclear, and it seems everyone's in wait-and-see mode for now. "Wait-and-see how the Lions season turns out"? Maybe not, but the two outcomes aren't entirely unrelated...
