The night’s main event goes down with a bit of controversy. During a relatively uneventful first round where both fighters seemed content to feel each other out, the action picked up during a scramble that saw Palhares stand over Marquardt and drop down for his notorious heel hook. Palhares executed it expertly, but Marquardt was able to quickly pull his leg out. Palhares broke his focus on his opponent for just an instance, making a questionable motion to the ref apparently accusing Marquardt of greasing his legs. Marquardt caught Palhares sleeping, and was able to drill his opponent right on the jaw, pounding him out in a fashion reminiscent of his past fights. Although Palhares seemed to suspect shenanigans, the commission cleared Marquardt of any wrong doing, saying his legs were dry as a bone. Huge win for Marquardt. Slipping out of that heel hook is something that not many people on the planet have been able to do. He moves right back up into the mix of contenders at 185.
