Rangers fans everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief this afternoon as the news spreads that restricted free agent Marc Staal has signed at five-year, $19.875 million contract.
With Only Days Before Camp, Rangers Sign Marc Staal To Five-Year Deal
TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported the news and the financial terms.
Marc Staal has agreed to terms with NYR. Five years, $3.975M per year. Done deal.
Staal is the best defenseman on the Rangers roster, and without him, the team would've been in serious trouble this year. After all, Henrik Lundqvist can't do it by himself. Staal averaged over 23 minutes of ice time per game in 82 games with the Rangers a year ago.
Blueshirt Banter, our Rangers blog, is actually complimentary of the team today, something that doesn’t happen often.
I would argue that being a Ranger fan means never breathing easy, but for today we will roll with it.
Congratulations to Marc, and props to the Rangers for not letting this linger into camp.
A cap hit of just $3.975 million for your best defenseman is a hell of a deal. Glen Sather actually gets some good press today. The Banter will have more, of course, and also be sure to check out SB Nation New York.
