With countries transitioning away from their mid-week slates, Thursday is a relatively slow day in world soccer. In that sense, we could be happy for the 1:00 p.m. Eastern deluge of UEFA Europa League matches, though if that sends too much at you at once, there are a number of other matches around the world worth your attention.
Thursday Matches Across Our Soccer World
CONCACAF Champions League and tonight’s big match at Pizza Hut Park deserve other, more detaield attention. Here’s the rest the world has to offer:
Brazil: Sao Paulo had their three match winning streak snapped at Botafogo on Sunday. Today, they try to start another run and continue their climb back up the table when they host continent champions Internacional.
Colombia: Yesterday, Itagui Ditares and La Equidad took leads in the first legs of their Copa Colombia semifinals. Today, Millionarios hosts Cúcuta Deportivo, the last quarterfinal to start. Second legs will take place next Tuesday.
Saudi Arabia: Both Al Hilal and Al Ittihad - Saudi titans off to perfect starts through four - are in action on Thursday. Al Hilal hosts Al Fateh, who’ve recovered from dropping their first two matches to register four points in in their last two. Al Ittihad’s at Al Ahli, losers of three in a row.
South America (Copa Sudamericana): CONMEBOL’s version of Europa League sees Newell’s Old Boys hosting Estudiantes, Colombia’s Sante Fe hosting Caracas, and Peru’s Sport Huancayo going to Uruguay to face Defensor Sporting. Last night, Benfield and Vélez Sarafield played to a 1-1 draw while Peru’s Universidad San Martín beat Ecuador’s Emelec, 2-1.
United Arab Emirates: Though two matches have already started, the day’s big match kicks-off at noon Eastern, with league co-leaders Al Jazira hosting Al Wahda.
