When a team’s general manager pens an open letter to fans saying his team will not be a contender next season, it’s easy (and, some would argue, appropriate) to mock. But it also raises all sorts of issues, because players tend to believe they and their team will always do better than anyone thinks.
Michael Beasley Didn’t Read David Kahn’s Open Letter
Well, more accurately, it raises issues because it makes a player look delusional. Take Michael Beasley, a guy who doesn’t have a reputation as being the most reasonable person ever. Beasley conducted a typical softball interview with Timberwolves.com, and was asked who he felt was the team to beat in the NBA. Considering David Kahn already said it wouldn’t be the Timberwolves, it seemed like a safe league-themed question.
Beasley’s answer?
Honestly, and I know a lot of people are not going to like that fact that I’m going to say this but I think we are the team to beat. You know, that’s just me and my ego speaking.
Did he just say we’re the team to beat? Quick, someone get Kahn over here to knock some sense into him!
Beasley goes on to say the Lakers are the team to beat because they won last year. I liked his first answer better.
