It takes an immense amount of confidence to call a fake field goal in overtime. The decision that Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio made to call or sanction this cheeky, risky play would have been laudable as evidence of boldness-slash-insanity even if it didn’t give Sparty a 34-31 triumph over Notre Dame. The Spartans are fortunate that it did: missing it and getting a second chance based on a delay of game would have elicited some vitriol.
VIDEO: Michigan State’s Gutsy Fake Field Goal Beat Notre Dame, But Did It Beat The Clock?
Somewhere in the shock and awe in Lansing that accompanied this play, someone certainly questioned whether the play clock expired before the ball was snapped. In the broadcast footage, ESPN’s clock definitely seems to reach double zeroes before the madness transpires. But I’m of the opinion that, especially in football, fortune favors the bold.
Tonight, for Michigan State, time may have done the same.
