Texans coach Gary Kubiak put himself in a position to be second guessed to death when he declined to attempt a Neil Rackers 53-yard potentially game-winning field goal on the first drive of overtime between Houston and Washington.
Gary Kubiak Clockblocks His Way Into Correct Overtime Decision Making
It was primed to be yet another case of fans knowing better than the head coach if the Redskins pulled out a victory, despite the fact that Rackers hadn’t attempted a field goal of 50 yards or longer since 2008 and is less than 50 percent from that range in his career.
This was almost the case, as the Redskins were in position to win with Graham Gano trying a 52-yard field goal for the win. Gano seemed to have drilled the attempt through, only Kubiak squeezed in one of those last millisecond timeouts to render the attempt nullified. Gano tried again, only for the kick to sail far wide to the right.
While everyone seems to rend their garments when a coach gets away with this sort of thing, the outrage always seems fresh and forgotten from instance to instance.
Kubiak wouldn’t be faced with the same troublesome decision on the Texans next drive, as Houston was able to drive close enough for Rackers to convert a makeable 35-yard kick.
