Reggie Wayne Touchdown Further Illustrates Craziness Of Calvin Johnson Ruling
↵On Sunday night, Reggie Wayne scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter that had little consequence outside of fantasy football circles, but it did prove an interesting example of some of the complexities, or rather inanities of the rule that governed the Calvin Johnson’s Week 1 game-winning touchdown catch that wasn’t.
↵Wayne caught the ball, came down with both feet, but was promptly striped by Terrell Thomas while it was still unclear whether Wayne had retained possession. Ignoring what the precise rule is, it’s every bit the reception that Calvin Johnson’s was the week before.
↵Context, of course, means everything. That’s what the rule is and everyone is basically going to have to live with it until the off-season, when the NFL competition committee will have a chance to change it. That is, if they decide to change it. Appearing on NFL Network to discuss the Johnson play last week, committee member and Colts president Bill Polian didn’t exactly convey the message that it was a huge priority for him at the moment, but wouldn’t rule it out.
