Respected motorsports writer Bob Margolis writes on his “Sledgehammer” blog today that NASCAR needs to seriously consider establishing an NFL-style local blackout rule for local television when races aren’t sold out.
Motorsports Writer Proposes NFL-Style Local TV Blackouts For NASCAR
↵Margolis says while he knows the rule wouldn’t be popular, NASCAR needs to implement a policy to virtually force local fans to come out to the race instead of sit at home:
↵↵Why not treat NASCAR fans with the same level of respect that NFL fans are given? If you want to see the game, buy a ticket. Want to see Brad Keselowski getting put into the wall by (insert driver’s name here) then buy a ticket.
↵↵If a blackout rule was put into place, Margolis writes that tracks would in turn have to spend more money and “step up their game” to make the fan experience better for those people who do come to the races. (You can read Margolis’ full blog here).
↵So in the end, it could be a positive.
↵Personally, though, I think local blackouts would be a bad move for a sport that doesn’t need any more negative publicity. NASCAR would be viewed as greedy or desperate with such a move.
↵That’s my take. Now share your thoughts.
