Since he's two seasons removed from winning a Calder Trophy, locking Steve Mason up for two years at around $3 million per year seems like a wise move. Of course, that's if you ignore his serious sophomore slump from a year ago, where Mason put up a GAA over three.
Steve Mason Signs Two-Year Extension In Columbus
That didn't stop the Blue Jackets, however. They signed Mason to a two-year, $5.8 million deal on Monday.
The cap hit comes in at $2.9 million, and compared to other goaltenders that have signed this summer, that’s not a bad deal.
But the timing is certainly curious. If Mason performs like the Calder Trophy winning goalie he was two years ago, it’s a hell of a deal. If the second-year Mason is the real Mason, the Jackets might regret this one.
Sounds like quite the $3 million gamble.
