Monday night, the Braves begin a crucial three-game series against the first-place Phillies, who they trail by three games. However, they will not be doing so at full strength, as scheduled starting pitcher Jair Jurrjens has been scratched after hurting his knee:
Jair Jurrjens Scratched From Start Against Phillies With Knee Injury
Frank Wren just told us that Brandon Beachy will start tonight in place of JJ Jurrjens against the Phillies....Jurrjens knee not good enuf
Jurrjens tweaked his knee during a bullpen session, and while the injury isn’t serious, this is still a big game for him to miss. The righty has had an up-and-down year, but is part of the regular rotation for a reason.
The 24 year old Beachy is a righty with a low-90s fastball and an impressive 2010 minor league track record. Over 35 appearances between AA Mississippi and AAA Gwinnett, he struck out 148 while walking just 28 in 119.1 innings. However, of those 35 appearances, only 13 were starts, and this being his Major League debut, there’s no telling how the pressure will manifest, if it shows itself at all.
For the Braves, it’s a bit of a bummer, but for Beachy, it’s an opportunity to be a hero. Check out more over at Talking Chop.
