Braylon Edwards will not start for the Jets against the Dolphins tonight, but that isn't anywhere close to the end of the story.
Braylon Edwards Will Not Start For Jets Against Dolphins
ESPN New York’s Rich Cimini reports that Jets general manager Mike Tennenbaum is citing Edwards’ late night, not his arrest on a DWI, as the reason he won’t start.
It’s because of when he was arrested, according to Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum.
“We felt he didn’t deserve to start based on the fact that ... not for the arrest as much as going out and being out until 5 in the morning,” Tannenbaum said Sunday morning as a guest of Ian O’Connor on 1050 ESPN Radio.
As for how much time he’ll miss, Fox’s Jay Glazer reports that Rex Ryan wants Edwards to miss just one play, while Jets brass want him to sit for a quarter.
Then ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted a couple of updates: Edwards is expected to play “a significant amount” tonight, and was on antibiotics on the night of his arrest. Schefter couched that second piece of information with “Still doesn’t change his poor decision,” but it’s worth wondering whether Edwards, who had a blood-alcohol level of .16, twice New York’s legal limit, considered the dangers of mixing prescription drugs and alcohol.
And then there’s the issue of the NFL Players’ Association standing behind Edwards. George Atallah, the NFLPA’s assistant executive director, tweeted about an NFL executive violating an obligation under the substance abuse policy and not being punished, then charged that medical research about concussions was suppressed before Congress got involved.
In case you were wondering if this could get more complicated, there are still about seven hours before the Jets and Dolphins kick off. It probably will.
