Miguel Cabrera Possibly Done For Year With Ankle Sprain

At 80-76 and well out of the race in the final week, the Tigers have little left to play for. Now they might have to play those meaningless games without Miguel Cabrera, who suffered an ankle injury on the basepaths Monday night. Writes Tom Gage:

Cabrera had singled and was returning to first on a throw to first by catcher Luke Carlin. It appeared he jammed his foot on the bag. He went to the ground, was tended to by trainer Kevin Rand, then hobbled to the Tigers' dugout where he slammed his helmet.

There’s no word on the severity of Cabrera’s ankle sprain, but it wouldn’t take much to knock him out for the remaining six games.

Cabrera has been the Tigers' best player, and is currently second in the Majors in OPS, narrowly behind Josh Hamilton. He's gone deep 38 times and driven in 126 runs, standing out as far and away the most dangerous hitter in the Detroit lineup. He's considered a candidate for the AL MVP, even though his team is going to miss the playoffs.

The 27 year old Cabrera still has five years remaining on a $152.3 million contract signed in March 2008. Read more on Cabrera and the Tigers over at Bless You Boys.
