On Saturday afternoon in Tampa, 4-seed Kentucky and 5-seed West Virginia are battling for a spot in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16. After a half, the Mountaineers lead on the scoreboard, 41-33.
Joe Mazzula leads West Virginia with 15 points so far. He’s been able to penetrate Kentucky’s defense to score from inside. Darryl Bryant has added 11 points, and has been a perfect 3-for-3 from three-point range. The Mountaineers have made five steals, giving themselves a few more opportunities to score than the Wildcats.
Kentucky is shooting 56.5 percent from the field as a team. Brandon Knight leads the Cats with 16 points.
The half ended with a bit of controversy. With the game clock expiring, there was a scramble for the ball. After initially declaring the half over, the referees called a foul on Kentucky, and sent West Virginia’s Casey Mitchell to the line. Mitchell sank both attempts, and the Mountaineers headed to the locker room with an eight-point lead rather than a six-point lead.
The winner of this Field of 32 match-up will advance to the Sweet 16, where they will play the winner of Sunday’s Ohio State-George Mason game. Follow along with our West Virginia blog, The Smoking Musket, and our Kentucky blog, A Sea Of Blue.
