No. 1 seed Pittsburgh shouldn’t have expected No. 8 seed Butler to roll over in their third-round NCAA Tournament matchup, but I’m not sure they expected the dogfight they have received. Butler raced ahead to a double-digit lead, and lead the Panthers 38-30 at halftime in Washington D.C.
NCAA Tournament Update: Butler Taking It To No. 1 Pittsburgh At Halftime
Butler took a 30-18 lead at one point, but Pittsburgh scored nine straight points to get back into the game. From there, though, the Bulldogs went on an 8-1 run to reestablish the eight-point lead.
Shelvin Mack continues to be on fire for the Bulldogs, scoring 16 first-half points while knocking down four three-pointers. Ashton Gibbs and Gilbert Brown countered for Pittsburgh with nine points apiece on a combined 8-10 shooting. The Panthers need to guard the three-point line, though, having already surrendered eight three-pointers.
