It took San Diego State University two overtimes, but on Saturday, the 2-seed Aztecs bested 7-seed Temple, 71-64. San Diego State will now advance in the bracket to the Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.
NCAA Bracket Update: San Diego State Puts Away Temple In Double Overtime, 71-64
The Aztecs led early, but the Owls refused to go away. Ramone Moore led Temple offensively with 17 points, and Lavoy Allen chipped in with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Poor shot selection late in the game haunted the Owls, however, and they managed to shoot only 37.3% from the field.
San Diego State was led by Billy White’s 16 points and 13 rebounds. Malcolm Thomas was the biggest thorn in Temple’s side, however. The senior forward scored 13 points, took down nine rebounds, and recorded four authoritative blocks.
This double-overtime win ends decades of futility for the San Diego State basketball program, which hadn’t even won its first NCAA Tournament game until Thursday. Here’s how the West Region bracket looks after the Aztecs’ win. All times Eastern.
