It took all year long for the rest of the country to notice Derrick Williams and the Arizona Wildcats, but after Thursday’s upset over Duke, he’s finally got everyone’s attention. His stock’s never been higher, and everyone wants to know more about America’s new favorite superstar.
Derrick Williams On Beating Duke In Sweet 16: ‘It’s A Great Feeling’
He’s college basketball’s Blake Griffin. And after introducing himself to America Thursday night, he talked about Arizona’s win on Tony Bruno’s radio show. Sports Radio Interviews provides a transcript:
“This is the best win we’ve had since I’ve been here at Arizona and actually in the last couple of years. Whenever you beat Duke, not only by more than two points or ten points, but we beat them by 16 points and it’s a great feeling. We played hard tonight.”
Okay, so as awesome as Williams is on the court, maybe his interviews still leave a little bit to be desired. But that’s normal, you know? He’s 20 years old.
And regardless of age or predictable answers, he’s become the most exciting player in college basketball at a time when everyone in America is watching college basketball. And like Blake Griffin, he’s so insane on the court that his interviews don’t even matter.
We’ve seen enough. We’re hooked. After Thursday’s display, America just wants more of Derrick Williams. And we’ll get it on Saturday night. “Everybody is excited, we’re playing UConn next,” Williams said, “and if we win that game, it’s going to the Final Four.”
But now it gets tougher for America. Derrick or Kemba, people--WHO YA GOT?
