Alex Tyus Pushes Florida To 53-44 Lead Over Butler In Second Half Of Elite Eight Game
Matt Howard, who continues to struggle with his shot, missed yet another three-pointer on Butler’s first possession after the under-12 minute timeout, dropping to 2-8 from the field for the game. Shelvin Mack then threw the ball away on a crosscourt pass against the Gators’ press, which eventually led to two free throws from Tyus and a 49-40 Florida lead at the 9:50 mark.
Mack tried to get Butler back in it with another pull-up three-pointer, but it went in and out. On the ensuing possession, Tyus drove, pulled up to avoid the charge and hit a right-handed floater to give Florida a 51-40 lead. Florida then fell asleep on an out of bounds play, allowing Howard to sneak in for a layup. The Gators then missed the rebound on a free throw, and Howard drew a foul on Tyus. Howard missed the free throw, but Andrew Smith climbed over Tyus’ back to tip it in and cut the lead to 51-44 with 8:35 remaining. Tyus responded by getting the roll on a jumper, his 14th point of the game.
