Why is Kentucky in the 2011 Final Four one year after losing five first-round picks in the 2010 NBA Draft? The question has been and will be asked by aggressive reporters all week until someone gets the answer they want. Luckily for them, DeAndre Liggins is here to save the day.
DeAndre Liggins Says Kentucky Had ‘Too Many Egos’ Last Season
Liggins, who played on the 2010 team with John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Patrick Patterson, Eric Bledsoe and Daniel Orton that lost to West Virginia in the Elite Eight, said the reason the 2011 Wildcats got further was because the 2010 team was full of egos.
"Last year's freshmen were great freshmen," Liggins said, according to Rick Bozich of the Courier-Journal. "But I just think, personally, too many egos. Everybody wanted to be the man.
This gives us a chance once again to rant about how the one-and-done nature of the NCAA Tournament changes perceptions so quickly. Last year, Kentucky lost two games all season. It just so happened that one of them was when they played a tough West Virginia team in the Elite Eight. This year, Kentucky lost eight games all season and got to the Final Four thanks in large part two buzzer beaters in games that could have gone either way. So, it’s kind of nonsensical to say the ego-less 2011 team was actually better than the 2010 team, end result notwithstanding.
But whatever, that’s the nature of the NCAA Tournament. So instead of going any further on this subject, let’s just get Cousins’ take.
Too many egos huh???
It’s almost like Cousins is proving Liggins’ point.
