Shaka Smart’s VCU Season Is Over; Where Will He Coach Next Year?

The hottest story of the month in college basketball, other than that whole championship game thing, is going to be the future of VCU coach Shaka Smart. Will he stay at VCU or bolt for higher-paying jobs at Missouri or N.C. State? It’s too early for any news on the matter to have broken, but fans of all three programs are going to parse Smart’s every word for the next several days.

After his upstart squad was eliminated by Butler in the Final Four Saturday night, Smart said:

In our program, we are going to continue to build. We’ve got a lot of things that we still want to accomplish. This was a terrific run. Are we capable of doing it again? Sure.

There’s precedent for a coach sticking around at a small school — Brad Stevens did it just last year, as a matter of fact. And there haven’t been any reports of either Mizzou or NCSU taking aim at Smart, but you’d have to think they are. Missouri has to go big after being left my Mike Anderson and spurned by Matt Painter, while Smart to N.C. State would mean a relieving conclusion to a largely newsless coaching search. Not to mention a coach with history in the region.
