The Buffalo Bills hold the third overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft and, as we previously explained, they’re going to have a lot of options with all the holes on the team. One interesting decision will be whether they decide to address the quarterback position. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is there and folks are split on whether head coach Chan Gailey and GM Buddy Nix will look to replace him.
2011 NFL Draft: Buffalo Bills Think Cam Newton Is Their Franchise Quarterback
Former NFL personnel man and current analyst for ESPN 101 in St. Louis, Tony Softli, reports that sources tell him the Bills feel Auburn QB Cam Newton is their guy.
But, don't be surprised if quarterback-friendly head coach Chan Gailey makes a hard play for Newton if he is still on the board. Sources say they feel he is the franchise quarterback for the Bills' organization and would have time to develop because of Fitzpatrick's presence on the roster.
It’s hard to take a lot of pre-draft reports seriously because of all the misinformation that’s being strewn about but it’s not a stretch to think the Bills really like Newton. Gailey has had success with athletic quarterbacks before and Newton fits the bill in that respect.
For his part, Gailey says they “believe and trust” in Fitzpatrick but, if that franchise quarterback is there, you have to think hard about it.
"Any time you have the opportunity to get a guy to take you to the Super Bowl for 10 or 12 years, you've got to take a long, hard look at the thing if you believe that," Gailey told Pete Prisco. "You've got to believe that in your heart of hearts and you've got to make that thing happen."
Only one more month until we find out if Newton is their guy. Check out Buffalo Rumblings for more on the Bills’ plans leading up to the 2011 NFL draft.
