The Denver Broncos hold the second overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft and it's unclear which position they're targeting at this point. If the Broncos had their way, though, they won't be picking at No. 2 -- they'd trade down. Mike Klis of the Denver Post writes that the Broncos "preference" is to trade back a few spots and snag extra draft picks in the second or third round.
2011 NFL Draft: Denver Broncos Prefer To Trade Down
Ideally, the Broncos trade back to either No. 3 Buffalo, No. 4 Cincinnati, No. 7 San Francisco or No. 8 Tennessee. Those four teams are in the quarterback market. So is Arizona at No. 5 but Cardinals GM Rod Graves almost never trades draft picks, and No. 10 Washington probably doesn't have enough draft-pick ammunition to move up to No. 2.
This is the preference many teams drafting near the top have but it's a hard feat to accomplish. The position teams are most likely to trade up for is quarterback and, if Auburn QB Newton is off the board, QB Blaine Gabbert would be the next best quarterback on the board. Would teams like the Bills, Bengals or 49ers trade up a few spots, giving up valuable second and third round draft picks, to secure Gabbert? That's the question that needs to be answered when talking about a Broncos trade down.
