The Arizona Cardinals hold the fifth pick in the 2011 NFL draft and the decision on who they select will obviously determine largely on who goes in the first four picks. If QB Blaine Gabbert falls to No. 5, there are plenty of folks who feel the Cardinals will have a difficult decision on their hands.
NFL Draft 2011: Larry Fitzgerald Doubts Cardinals Go With QB At Fifth Pick
One of those players is not Larry Fitzgerald. He recently said he doubts that the Cardinals select a quarterback fifth overall.
"I would doubt that we would draft a quarterback that high. I would doubt it," Fitzgerald said. "But, who am I? I'm just a player. Management hasn't told me if they are going to go in any direction."
(With the lockout, management can’t tell him anything.)
Fitzgerald knows drafting a quarterback means there’s some sort of rebuilding going on and, with a rookie quarterback, the chances of success in 2011-12 aren’t very great. That’s understandable from Fitzgerald’s standpoint, but the Cardinals have to do what’s best for the long-term future of the team and that may be Gabbert.
