Gene Chizik On Cam Newton In 2011 NFL Draft: ‘Don’t Let That Other Stuff Fool You’

Auburn head coach Gene Chizik clearly feels his former QB, Cam Newton, will be successful in the NFL. Chizik spoke with Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com this week and had a few things to say for Newton's draft critics.

"NFL stuff, I'll make this really clear: Somebody's going to take him really high and have a great player. Don't let that other stuff in between fool you."

Unfortunately, the other stuff matters. Newton won’t be bigger, stronger, faster and able to dominate the field like he was in college. NFL offenses are complex and Auburn didn’t run an offense that tested Newton’s ability to manage an offense like the NFL will.

At the end of the day, NFL draft critics can say what they want about Newton but it doesn't look like it will matter much. He's currently the odds-on favorite to be the first overall pick by the Carolina Panthers.
