One of the most interesting players entering the 2011 NFL draft is former Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett. Physically, he’s one of the top quarterback prospects and a first round pick. However, off-the-field concerns have knocked his draft stock down (at least in the media’s eyes).
2011 NFL Draft: Ryan Mallett Reportedly Cancels Panthers Meeting
A report by Brad Biggs of National Football Post adds to those off-the-field concerns. Biggs reports Mallett was a no-show for a meeting earlier this month with the Carolina Panthers, who hold the top pick in the draft.
Mallett met team officials for dinner April 8, the day he arrived in town, but meetings the next day at Bank of America Stadium were cancelled after Mallett called and said he was sick, multiple sources told the National Football Post.
The report also states Mallett was “seen out on the town late” the night before but we don’t know if those two events are connected. As far as we know, he really could have been sick. That said, even if you were sick, canceling a meeting with a team doesn’t look good. Maybe the excuse was legitimate but, to outsiders, it adds to the concerns some people have about him.
We’ll see what comes of this. There are two sides to every story.
[Update: There are two sides to every story. Here is Mallet’s side of the story.]
