With the NFL lockout, players can not be traded in the 2011 NFL draft -- only picks (and future picks) can be traded. So that’s lead to two schools of thoughts on how trades will go down next week.
NFL Draft 2011: Panthers, Broncos Haven’t Received Trade Offers
Some feel there will be more trades because GMs will be itching to make some sort of move and may not have free agency to improve the roster so there’s more of a desperate feeling to get the player you need during the draft. Others predict there will be less trades because you have less pieces to trade.
For the top two picks in the NFL draft, there have been no trade offers. The Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos have both said they haven't received any trade offers. Contrast that to Bill Belichick who says the New England Patriots have had a lot of calls around the 28th and 33rd picks.
Maybe Panthers GM Marty Hurney and Broncos VP John Elway aren’t being truthful and they’re simply enticing someone (anyone!) to call them and make a trade offer. Both teams probably wouldn’t mind trading down because of the bounty you’d receive in return.
It’s also possible that simply no one wants the top two picks in the draft. With the money you would commit to them, it’s not worth it, especially in a year where there’s no clear-cut No. 1 player.
